Completion of Auckland City Hospital Central Plant and Tunnel Project
Projects

McConnell Dowell and Built Environs are proud to announce that we have officially handed over the new Central Plant Complex | Te Manawāora to our client Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora.

The joint venture constructed the new five-storey seismic resilient building and 240-metre tunnel on time, on budget and with an impressive safety record over the four-year construction period.

Work on the project included:

  • Piling 110 foundation piles between 7.5m and 26m over a ten-week period
  • Constructing a 4m x 3.5m, 240m long tunnel using open-cut-and-cover methodologies
  • Building a five-storey, 5,230 m2 plant building using bespoke triple friction pendulum bearings
  • Installation and commissioning of new hospital backbone services and equipment
  • Deconstruction and decommissioning of old services and plant building A06

It was imperative that no major disruptions were experienced by the main hospital or surrounding health services while our team occupied a small footprint of the entire medical campus. To achieve this goal, a large portion of the works happened in the background, planning and sequencing activities in tandem.

We are happy to say that our client was impressed with the level of detail the project team went to so that no disruptions or outages occurred in any one of the construction phases – especially during the integration of services into the existing hospital systems.
